Situated in Encinitas on K street (off the South Coast Highway 101), the Meditation
Gardens is part of the Self-Realization Temple and Retreat. This is also the
site where the Golden Lotus Temple, built in 1937, once stood. It was visited
by thousands between 1938 and 1942 however, gradual erosion of the shoreline
ultimately caused the temple to slip its foundation, leaving only the terrazzo
steps intact. Both the temple and gardens were inspired by the spiritual leader,
Yogananda. His goal was to promote peace and harmony throughout the world centering
around scientific methods of meditation that enable each individual to realize
the one truth underlying all religions and all life.
The cliffside meditation gardens, on approximately 17 acres, is open to the
public on Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The gardens, very popular to both visitors
and locals alike, is an excellent place to relax and absorb the beauty of nature.
Meditation benches are provided for those who wish to sit and absorb the incredible
peace and tranquility of the place.
Walk up the inviting paths surrounded by exotic plants, flowers and trees,
to the Koi ponds and miniature waterfalls. When you reach the top of the bluffs,
enjoy the expansive views of the Pacific ocean. But most of all, enjoy the
feeling of inner stillness, beauty and harmony!
